Cambodian Youth Initiate An Idea to Produce Plates from Leaves as a Substitute for Plastic
Recognizing problems that result from using plastic and seeking for projects to help mitigate environmental issues and concerns, a team of students from Techcho Sen Samroang High School in Oddar Meanchey province has brainstormed a creative idea to create plates by using plant leaves in order to help lower plastic use.
The “For Our Community” project uses the tag line “ Preserve Protect and Conserve Our Natural Resources” as a way to inspire local citizens to join in the cause to help reduce the currently overwhelming use of plastic and white foam plates.
Mr. Ouk Kimsour, the team leader of the “For Our Community” project said that this idea is still in the process of being studied. The team is preparing to test their first sample and will continue to study the design, size, price, and how to make the plates with better quality to be used as a replacement for plastic.
Loeurn Chai Mingju, a student in this local high school, also encourages the community to limit the use of white foam plates and produce their own eco-friendly plates from leaves. Furthermore, the leaf-made plates might be attractive for tourists, so they can be used to make some extra earnings. Bun Salut, monk leader of the community monk forest Rukhavan also expresses his support for the project idea and the youth contribution to helping preserve the environment.
