The government announced that it will cancel the Water Festival, an annual 3-day ceremony which usually takes place from 30 September to 01 November, in order to contain the spread of Covid-19.

In a letter from Council of Ministers sent to Kong Sam Ol, the chairman of the National Committee for Organising National and International Festivals, on August 11, the government approved the cancellation of Water Festival 2020.

Ek Tha, spokesman for the office of the Council of Ministers, told Khmer Times that it a good idea to suspend the event because authorities are concerned with the coronavirus preventative measures.

The Water Festival usually celebrates at the four-face river in Phnom Penh, and thousands of people always gather at the event.
