Phnom Penh-to-International Airport Railway to be Closed Temporarily

During a meeting on road safety at the Interior Ministry on Tuesday, Minister of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol said that the ministry is considering temporarily closing railway service connecting the central of Phnom Penh city to Phnom Penh International Airport.

“We will consider halting the train service from Phnom Penh Royal Railway Station to Phnom Penh International Airport. Previously, there were a lot of passengers, but it is low now because of the temporary suspension of international flights and the lack of passengers,” said Chanthol.

“Therefore, we need to consider the closure and if possible, we should shut it down due to no passengers and causing traffic accidents,” he added.

Mr. Chanthol noted that we will discuss with the Royal Group, the company which operates the station, and if it still has no passengers traveling from the station to the airport.

He also added that the railway causes traffic accidents as well because some motorbike riders cross the railway without vigilance, causing some to fall and get injured.
